We’re living in a turbulent time, an era where we need heroes more than ever to inspire and lead us. Captain America is not that hero, as his plans for a HYDRA coup de grace finally kicked off this week in the zero issue for Secret Empire.

Marvel movies aren’t just licenses to print money for Disney lately. They’re also platforms for new talent to emerge, especially behind the camera. Before Captain America: The Winter Soldier hit screens, Anthony and Joe Russo were known for helming several tight episodes of Community and a short film that was literally called Carf*ckers. Now? They’re Marvel’s hottest creative team, directing not one but two Avengers movies next. The same could be said for James Gunn, who despite having directed the creepy and fantastic Slither had yet to become a household name. The list goes on and on, with two new names joining the mighty Marvel library this week: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

Marvel’s recent superhero flicks have run a wide gauntlet of varying heroes so far: Thief with a heart of gold and incredible shrinking powers, Led Zeppelin powered Thunder God flung across space and Tony Stark 2.0 wizard surgeon to name a few. Marvel’s next big film however? That’s Captain Marvel, a superhero adventure featuring something that the cinematic division of the house of ideas has never tried before: Giving the lead role to a woman.

Times have changed over at Marvel. A new generation of heroes have risen, some good and some bad. While characters such as Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan and Miles Morales feel like worthy successors to the identities that they’ve claimed as Hawkeye, Miss Marvel and Spider-Man respectively, other new additions feel ham-fisted and forced upon readers so far. It’s very much old school and new school clashing right now, something that Marvel is looking to fix with their upcoming Generations event that’ll run from July through to September over the course of ten of their books

The House of Ideas knows that it needs to restore some order to a very chaotic universe right now. Which is where Marvels comes in, as that series looks like it’ll be blending the past, present and future into one cohesive direction for the publisher. And according to a leaked synopsis on Amazon, that status quo certainly is coming back
