Chinese regulators plan to limit time spent playing video games. This tyrannical curbing comes on top of other video game sanctions, such as the government refusing to approve any new games since March this year, effectively killing off new releases in that lucrative territory for unknown reasons back then.
Though the country’s put a hold on the games that can be approved for sale in the region, China’s become an enticing market for a lot of publishers. When they’re able to sell their games in the country, there’s an opportunity to sell to millions upon millions more eager costumers. Video game publishers have discovered, just like the film industry did, that it’s often worth pandering to the Chinese and other conservative South East Asian markets.
Consoles aren’t just alive and kicking. They’re doing better than ever. Longer cycles, better games and an eye on creating titles with extended longevity is making the industry as profitable as can be. While it’s highly likely that you won’t see a PlayStation 5 or even an Xbox Next before 2020, the current generation is still doing well. And it still has potential to do even better.
Chinese internet giant Tencent is the official publisher of the unfathomably popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. They’re not just publishing the game as you know it on PC though. They’re also publishing mobile versions of the game, for the mobile-mad Chinese market. The astute among you would have noticed the plural – and that’s because Tencent has two different official PUBG games hitting phones in China; PUBG: Exhilarating Battlefield and PUBG: Army Attack.
