Square Enix has officially confirmed that Marvel’s Avengers will be up for a free upgrade from PS4 and Xbox One to PS5 and Xbox Series X, when said versions arrive on those machines. Players will be able to carry over their save-games and progression, with cross-generation multiplayer within the same console family also being supported.

Crystal Dynamics were tasked with making a new Avengers game and in a world that has had over a decade of costumes blow up on the big screen, nailing the right look was a job that was bound to have a few detractors.

Marvel’s Avengers may have a packed roster that includes a familiar thunder god, billionaire philanthropic genius in advanced armour and a shield-slinging patriot, but the team isn’t just going to get a little bit bigger. It’s about to become stronger than ever when Kamala Khan suits up as Ms Marvel and joins the fight.

Just like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Square Enix’s Avengers game will have several alternate skins to unlock and for the Hulk, the team at Crystal Dynamics have settled on Hulk’s other persona, Joe Fixit.

Throw in some character design that just looks odd, a focus on the most bankable characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and voice acting that sounds like a case of going through the motions, and it’s unclear what kind of game Marvel’s Avengers wants to be. Fortunately, there’s still plenty of time to make some changes.

Crystal Dynamic's Avengers has a tough challenge to overcome. How do you gather some of Marvel's most iconic modern heroes into one game and balance their unique abilities with a cohesive and realistic combat system? How do you have characters like Thor and Black Widow fighting the same enemies without one feeling out of place? Sitting down to watch a 30-minute gameplay demo, these questions raced through my head. And I left with an answer that wasn't exactly satisfying.

If Crystal Dynamics wants to create a game that can last for years after launch, then the character action needs to be heckin’ appealing. With a full squad of Avengers arriving on launch day and more planned for a free release in the months to come, Crystal Dynamics is betting that the real appeal for Marvel’s Avengers will lie in not just one hero, but all of them.

Originally announced back in 2017, Square Enix has been extremely cagey about discussing the game but that is expected to change on June 10th.
