Flamebait Friday Debate: To Black Friday or nah?

By Brad Lang

Woah, it’s Black Friday! What a wild, random event of hyper-capitalistic nightmares distilled into a single day that always falls after Thanksgiving…a holiday we don’t even celebrate here. Look, I know I’m a young bean around these parts (as I’m constantly reminded, despite numerous examples of my back being as frail as some of the dinosaurs plodding around this site) …

The Epic Games Store has been an overnight revolution, promising developers a larger slice of the revenue pie and attracting consumers with a selection of exclusive and free games. It hasn’t been without some criticism though, as some people reckon that Epic has outright stolen business from Steam. There’s a debate that’s not only worth having over the two platforms, but one that should be reset as well.

Flamebait Friday Debate: What movie terrified the world but left you unmoved?

By Brad Lang

We had a tradition in my university residence, a weekly movie club of sorts. Every Saturday, to recover from the hangovers that usually followed a Friday night out, a group of friends and I would gather in the common room and watch a horror film. The selection rotated every week so that we all got a chance to choose what …

Flamebait Friday Debate: Which character do you WANT to die this weekend?

By Brad Lang

It’s kind of a big weekend for nerds around the world. For some, the release of Avengers: Endgame marks the last time they’ll be able to see some of their favourite characters in the MCU on the big screen. For others, it will be the beginning of what will no doubt be a tumultuous time in Westeros, as in last …

Friday Debate: What rocked and what sucked at E3?

By Geoffrey Tim

Last week, we skipped out on a Friday debate because we were still incredibly busy with E3 coverage, so I suppose it’s time to ruminate on this year’s show. Overall, I thought it was a little lacklustre, but that’s to be expected as we come into the tail end of a generation. That said did anything tickle you?

Friday Debate: Should game concepts like Battle Royale be legally protected?

By Geoffrey Tim

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds PUBG Corp. is busy trying to sue Epic games for the similarities in game concepts between it, and the most popular game on the planet right now, Fortnite Battle Royale. Those concepts themselves aren’t entirely new, stemming from a Japanese movie called Battle Royale, that put dozens of children on an island with goal of being the last one standing – Basically, a precursor to The Hunger Games. It brings up an interesting question in video games: Should those ideas be protected?

Friday Debate: Are you a sucker for any superstitions?

By Geoffrey Tim

It’s Friday the 13th! For many, it’s an ill omen, a sign of impending misfortune – for other like me, it’s a meaningless day. It’s a Friday, and Friday the 13th is better than Monday the anything. Triskaidekaphobia is a very real thing, and one of the more prevalent superstitions. While I don’t consider myself a superstitious person at all, I’ll still pause when I have to say, walk under a ladder, or open an umbrella indoors. Then I’ll do it anyway as reason overrides the bits of my brain that have these long-ingrained superstitions in them.
