With Joker shattering box office records all over the place, it seemed an inevitability when a story broke last night that writer/director Todd Phillips was not just working on a sequel, but also on giving other DC Comics characters the same gritty mature R-rated reboot treatment. Except that story is not completely true.

Since Justice League flopped, DC’s iconic big blue boy scout’s has been persona non grata essentially. The future of the DC cinematic universe is one of standalone comic book films that focus more on character than making massive bank ala Marvel’s shared universe concept, a future that has yet to reveal if Henry Cavill will step back into Superman’s blue suit and red cape. That doesn’t mean that Cavill has given up on the role just yet though.

While it may have resulted in a delay for the film, director Jeff Fowler and his team took the time to give Sonic the makeover that he needed. Helped by artist Tyson Hese (Whose Boxer Hockey Sonic the Hedgehog comics from an earlier era are still pure gold), Sonic’s new look was just such a massive improvement overall. It had attitude, style and it simply pops in a manner that puts the original design to shame.
