Until the end of time itself, Star Wars Battlefront II will be a testament to the idea of microtransactions without limits. Overall, its been a harsh lesson for EA to learn from. A lesson that they say, has resulted in them rethinking how they’ll use microtransactions in the future.

Maybe 2018 will be the year that publishers decide to scale back on plans to make increasingly expensive video game development cycles a touch bit more profitable. At least that’s what analyst Doug Creutz from financial service and investment banking firm Cowen alluded to, when he spoke to clients on CNBC .

Metal Gear Survive won’t have pay-to-win microtransactions and loot boxes after all

By Darryn Bonthuys

One game that people were concerned would kick 2018 off on the wrong foot? Metal Gear Survive, which initially looked to be filled with a standard number of microtransactions of the pay to win variety. Fret not, as Konami's latest spin-off is keeping those microtransactions away from that controversial design choice.

I’m kind of keen for Metal Gear Survive and its harsh landscape filled with all manner of creatures who resemble the aftermath of a homeopathic apocalypse. Whether you want to go it alone or with a group of pals, the choice is yours. What isn’t up for debate however, is the fact that you’ll need a persistent online connection to the world wide web if you want to experience th spin-off seamlessly.

Destiny 2 may have plenty of critics divided over certain aspects over the base game, but most players can agree on one thing: Those microtransactions need to be toned down. A major gripe for many a Guardian, players don’t exactly dig the fact that the line between earned loot boxes and those available for purchase happens to be blurrier than one of my favourite Puddle of Mudd tracks from the early 2000s.

current climate around microtransactions (largely because of the public reaction to Star Wars: Battlefront II), it’s probably not the wisest move for Activision to finally turn on Call of Duty: WWII’s paid microtransactions, but they’ve done it anyway. Three weeks and a bit after the game’s launch, players can now pay real money to buy digital points, with which they can purchase loot boxes.
