Second Hand Market Not Harming Gaming

By Gavin Mannion
August 29, 2008

The general manager of European publishing for EA Games, Jens Uwe Intat, has been talking to GamesIndustry.biz about the second hand gaming marketing and how it is a critical situation for them. He goes on to say that you cannot compare the second hand games market to other second hand markets as games don’t suffer the wear and tear of …

An industry for itself, created by itself… trying to be someone else

By PillsburyDeeBoy In recent memory, games like Grand Theft Auto and Halo have assisted console gaming by becoming front and center in the public’s eye and shaking up entertainment as a whole. Halo was accused of stealing Ben Stiller’s thunder, and, likewise, there were fears that Iron Man may under perform due to Grand Theft Auto’s imposing presence. Grand Theft …

Team ICO to reveal new title "soon"

By Nick De Bruyne

Many of us were hoping to see a big announcement from Sony at E3 or Leipzig 08 about the new game from Team ICO, the team that brought us gems like Shadow of the Colossus and Ico. Sony's Shuhei Yoshida, when asked about whether or not the title will be ready to be shown by the Tokya Game Show, had the following to say: "I cannot tell, but But I can say that they’ve been working very hard since the release of Shadow of the Colossus." He does go on to say that we would be seeing the new title "soon". It would be great if it was ready by the Tokyo Game Show but for now we can do nothing but wait until any news is released. Team ICO's new project is being made for the PS3 only as far as we know and there is no indication if the game will be available on any other platforms just yet.

Blu-Ray Made No Difference For Bioshock

By Gavin Mannion

Well how’s this for blatantly obvious, the extra storage capacity of Blu-Ray hasn’t made a blind bit of difference to 2K Games in the process of porting Bioshock over to the PS3. Since it fitted happily onto the 360”s DVD I don’t think this is much to get excited about though apparently this is big news? Melissa Miller from 2K …

I have mentioned before that I think people like Denis are great for the industry and we need more characters like him. However that didn’t stop me moaning when Nick mentioned he was once again defending his creation to the world, this time through a Joystiq video interview. The first part is above and you can click through to listen …

Heavy Rain – Just An Interactive Movie?

By Nick De Bruyne
August 28, 2008

heavyrain4.jpg While there are very few who would disagree that Heavy Rain is looking really interesting, there are a few things that needed to be pointed out about the direction that it is taking. What makes what I am about to say even more interesting is the fact that today, David Cage, the boss of Quantic Dreams actually said that he considered Heavy Rain to be "the most important title for next year". Really? Why on earth would he say that? There is no doubt that the game is looking visually stunning and the concept is interesting to say the least, but after looking at some gameplay footage and watching a developer interview I really have to wonder what the buzz is all about. In the developer interview, the previously mentioned David Cage speaks about how Heavy Rain is a different interactive experience and how it allows people to interact and not only watch a story. The gameplay footage says otherwise though. From what we have seen so far, the game looks to be the equivalent to a movie that breaks for some quicktime events. Now while we have seen very little of the game so far, this is the footage that they decided to show off as their first gameplay video. While the story may prove to be a deep and emotional experience it kind of feels like they are basically making a movie and then adding some mini-games onto it to make it interactive. This is an interesting concept as far as I can see and may indeed may be an interesting way to tackle storytelling in the future but does it make this game important? I'm interested to learn more about the game as more details pour out onto the internet but I fail to see what exactly it is that the developers are aiming for here and whether or not this game could truly be considered a game rather than an interactive "film". What do you guys think? Do you think the game is onto something or do you think that it may just be too early to really tell what it's going to offer?

Could it possibly be true, the game that we all were waiting for around 10 years ago may actually be nearly ready? According to George Broussard of 3D Realms, Duke Nukem Forever has several hours of gameplay completed and is now undergoing testing. However before you get to excited by this and think that the game may actually be released …
