Turok – Xbox360: Reviewed

By Nick De Bruyne
May 26, 2008

To give you a very light idea of the story, Turok a Native American, is in space as the "new guy" with a bunch of Mercs who don't trust him when their ship gets damaged and ends up sprawled all over an unknown jungle planet . The ship has split into two, so Turok and the survivors from his end of the ship make a plan to find the other half, quickly realising that there is more to this planet than they realised (Oceanic Airlines?).... I usually have no problems sniping something two pixels wide when playing most shooters, but Turok's controls lack precision to the point where it can become impossible to aim at someone who is standing dead still a few metres in front of you as you battle with the inability to make small adjustments to your crosshair.... The rest of the controls are fine and I had very little issues getting used to them but the aiming is infuriating and I can probably imagine that if any sort of casual gamer picked this game up, they would suffer with the controls to the extent that they would stop playing because I had an immense struggle with it and I have been playing console games for 20 years now and I could barely handle it when playing the game on it's easiest setting. The addition of a decent auto-aim or a smoother aiming system would have easily made me think higher of this game, but the controls alone made me want to take it out of my console and never put it back in again.... I did however have a good laugh when one of my gunshots scared one of the friendlier dinosaurs and it ran around in the same circular path for about five minutes and I imagine it would continue to do so until I shot it or left.... When it comes down to weapons, the developers did a pretty decent job, with each weapon having an alternate fire but the major problem I have is that a lot of them feel like they were stolen right out of the cookie jar.... You get the feeling that the game had five different lead designers over the course of the game because it simply can't decide what it wants to be and instead tries to be everything else, making it feel very unfocused and very average. There is nothing truly unique to it and I honestly had points in the game where it felt like I was playing something from 10 years ago with a revamped graphics engine. What really got to me was the fact that for some reason, it still felt like the game had something to offer, but everywhere you turned you were faced with another bad design decision that confused or frustrated you.... I honestly can't see how the developers played this game and thought that it was fun, they were so jaded with the ideas of knifing a dinosaur that they forgot to make sure that everything else in the game was actually playable.... However, as far as I have heard, it isn't bad, isn't great either but it definitely isn't enough to save this game from the dismal attempt at a first person shooter that it is.... This wasn't the case though, so what we are left with is an frustrating, average, shallow shooter which can be finished in around 8 hours ( Five hours if you know how to pass certain areas and aren't left wandering or dying for 45 minutes at a time) that is not nearly worth the R600.00 price tag.... If you are really desperate for a shooter and have already played most other shooters out there, then take a look at Turok, if not, move on. I oddly enough still have a bit of a good feeling about this game even though playing it was a painful and aggravating experience.... Scoring: Gameplay: 4/10 : Spray and pray at its absolute worst Presentation: 7/10 : Decent Sound: 7/10 : Like listening to Kimi Raikonnen talk Value: 5/10 : Depends if you use the disc as a coaster or not Overall: 6/10 (Not an average) : A good idea destroyed by bad decisions in the design process.

Resident Evil 5 to feature two player co-op

By Nick De Bruyne

res5coop.jpg According to Destructoid, one of the first english previews of Resident Evil 5 featured on GamesRadar might have just announced two player co-op for Resident Evil 5. In the article they state that the preview is a touch confusing, however at some point in the preview it is written that "In the areas where you’re separated from your partner," and then a short bit later it is said that "It all depends on whether you’re Player Two or not,". If this is proven to be true, we can all look forward to some pant-wetting co-op action. I really hope that this becomes a reality and it will be interesting to see how they pull it off.

No Xbox 360 Spring Update: Confirmed

By Nick De Bruyne

Some bad news has arrived for Xbox Live users in the form of an interview with Marc Whitten on Next Generation . It seems that Microsoft has opted to skip the Spring Update for this year, stating that they want to spend more of their time on building a "proper infrastructure and scale for the service". They will however be making a few changes. [Thanks to Krypty for the tip] Microsoft will be making changes to their DRM policy, which will allow users to access downloaded content without having to be connected to Xbox Live, anyone who has had to replace their console will know what I am talking about. Another change is that MS are going to be streamlining Xbox Live Arcade by removing games that have underperformed (Ouch!), with xbox360fanboy.com reporting that "Games that have been on the market for over six months, have a Metacritic average lower than 65% and a conversion rate below 6% will be targeted for de-listing." (Ouch again!) This of course means that all Spring Update leaks that we heard about are all fake, it's a shame really.

That's right folks and great news it is! All you PS3 owners out there can look forward to Bioshock on your favorite black and shiny console! A 2K representative told IGN this morning that "We can officially confirm that BioShock is in development for the PlayStation 3,". The news has also been confirmed in an EGM interview with Jordan Thomas, the man who has stepped in as creative director for Ken Levine. According to 1up.com an article in the July edition of EGM is saying that Bioshock for PS3 should be hitting shelves in time for Christmas. 2K is expected to give an official statement soon. But with the sources of the information being so credible, we can definitely say that this is not bogus. To all of you PS3 owners that didn't own an Xbox 360 as well, you can look forward to a very deep and immersive experience, coming soon, with crosses, squares, triangles and circles to a retailer near you!

Secret Window – Blu Ray Review + Competition

By Nick De Bruyne

Dutton, Maria Bello, Timothy Hutton Directed by: David Koepp After last week’s first attempt at a fully fledged Blu Ray review, it seems that it draws a little more interest than just releasing short reviews. It also seems that the competition is appreciated, but I really need more entries this time, come on guys, it’s for free. Let’s take a look at this week’s movie, Secret Window, based on master of horror Stephen King’s story called “Secret Window, Secret Garden”. The story is based around a successful writer, Mort Rainey, who seems to be going through a bit of writers block after he discovers his wife has been having an affair. He has moved to the country, and is holed up in a little log cabin in the woods on a beautiful lake.... He spends most of his time sleeping, moving between his bed and couch, and get’s very little writing done. One day a guy shows up on his doorstep, claiming that Mort stole his story, called Secret Garden, a few years ago, and if he does not fix this, he is going to kill him.... If someone threatens to kill me over something I have not done, I would panic and freak out and wreak all sorts of havoc, but Mort seems to go about things in a way to calm fashion. He then enlists the help of a PI, who he’s used before, to try and get to the bottom of what’s going on, but things get out of hand very quickly. I can’t really reveal anymore o the plot here, as it would give way too much away, but let’s just say that there is a small twist in the plot, which explains the whole movie. It’s a dark movie, and Depp gives a very intense performance, as always, but it could have been done a little better, and instilled a little more fear into the viewer. Just a note here, it seems that Johnny Depp has picked up a few character traits from Capt Jack Sparrow, and this is evident more than once in the movie. Video The video in this movie is average, and sometimes you can tell the difference between the DVD version and the Blu-Ray version, but this time I could not.... Sound The movie is presented in both PCM uncompressed Surround, and also in standard Dolby Digital 5.1, and once again sits on the average fence, having moments of sheer brilliance, quickly moving to narrow fields of audio and wrong speaker output, so again, good, but not great.... If I had not figured it out so early in the movie, it might have been a little more thrilling, and it’s not that much better than the DVD version, so here I’m going to have to say, if you don’t own it, and like the best, go for the BD version.

Bad news for South Africans: No Penny Arcade game for us

Last night I was browsing around on XBL marketplace and I saw that the new Penny Arcade game: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness was available! It is 1600 points, which isn't bad considering its not your standard arcade game. But when I tried to download the trial I was given the message that the game is not available in our region! I was really looking forward to trying this game out, but now we will have to take extra measures to download the game. Should we do what we always do and blame Germany? Ya, Why not. Damn you Germany.

First Direct Feed Prince of Persia Screens – Looking Good

By Nick De Bruyne

Ubisoft have released a bunch of direct feed screenshots for the new Prince of Persia game. The images are looking really good and I must say that the art style chosen seems to work very well. They seem to have done a good job of making the "comic book" art style work really well, it looks similar to what was done in Crackdown, but the execution seems to have a much better feel to it. Let's hope that the game plays as good as it looks.
