Don't fan test your PS3

By Gavin Mannion

So yesterday a story hit the web about how to do a fan test on your PS3 which would help blow out all the dust. Now I didn’t post about this because it didn’t seem like the best idea in the world and wouldn’t you know it, I was right… Apparently doing this ‘test’ can cause your CPU and GPU …

101 games down, 89 to go. The South African Premier league, now in its second season is in full swing, many hard fought games have been played and the top and bottom teams are starting to emerge. Last season’s winner PO7H3AD has already secured this season’s league by winning all 19 of his games while 6 other teams are fighting …

Things are getting very strange around this title with misinformation and rumours being the order of the day. Earlier today quite a number of sites released the PS3, PS2 and Wii PAL release dates. According to an official EA Games circular these versions were going to be released on the 29th of August. Groans rang out through the Internet corridors …

My Little Pwny

By Nick De Bruyne

Now this is something completely different. A person who goes by the handle "Anime Amy" has put a rather interesting item up on Ebay . No, your eyes aren't deceiving you. It is, in fact , a custom made "My Little Master Chief Pony". The bidding closed at $151.57 (R1,189!). The Pony ( or Pwny as I like to call it) was sculpted with Apoxie Sculpt and the armour has been weathered to give an authentic battle look. In her description, she states that "This is a must have for any Custom Pony fan, Even for any HALO fan in general! If this auction breaks 100.00 I will include a hand sculpted assault rifle free". Now as detailed as the Pwny is, you have to wonder what kind of My Little Pony or Halo fan would fork out that much money for the little figurine. I almost have the need to say that I now have, in fact, seen everything.

Casting Call: Gears of War

By Nick De Bruyne

In Casting Call we take a look at popular video games in the industry and have a bit of poke around who could be cast as the roles of the characters if a movie was to be made.... Of course their are a few exceptions, such as Angelina Jolie taking the role as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider movies. So, we are looking for the type of actors who aren't necessarily struggling to find work, but don't exactly have movie scripts filling up their mail boxes. My Choices for Gears of War: <Gavin, please insert the "read more" here and delete this sentence!> Marcus Phoenix: Dominic Purcell Many of you will know Dominic from the hit TV series Prison Break in his role as "Lincoln Burrows" aka Linc the Sink. While he bears only a slight resemblance to Marcus Phoenix, his hard features combined with a talent for acting gives the producers more than enough reason to consider him for a role.... Runners-up: Mickey Rourke, Batista (Yes, the wrestler) Dominic Santiago: Edgar Ramirez If anyone of you readers have seen Edgar Ramirez in his role as the Bounty Hunter, Choco, in the 2005 movie Domino (based on real events), you will know that he really knows how to pull of a mean Hispanic bad-ass-gun-for-hire. Not many people will recognise him right off the bat, but I definately think he could pull the role off really well.... Damon Baird: Scott Caan A lot of you may be familiar with Scott Caan, with parts in movies such as Ocean's Eleven, Varsity Blues and Gone in Sixty Seconds. Damon Baird is a wise-ass with a loose tongue, and if Scott Caan's previous characters have been anything to gauge by, he will pull it off beautifully. With the right look, a big enough build to fit into what must be a ridiculously heavy suit of armour and the happy-go-lucky attitude, I see him as a definite contender for the role. Runners-up: Ryan Reynolds, Val Kilmer (don't ask me, he has been popular on forums apparently) Augustus Cole: Terry Tate (aka Mighty Rasta) Ever seen that Reebok advert that has an NFL player hanging around an office annihilating anyone who isn't doing their jobs properly?... For those of you who don't know Terry Tate was the actual voice actor for Augustus Cole in Gears of War. Not only that, but after watching him record his lines, the team at Epic decided to beef Cole up significantly to match Terry Tate's gargantuan body.... He may not have the most acting experience in the world, but it's not like Cole is going to do anything other that kick ass and chew bubble-gum throughout the movie.... Also, let us know if you have any requests for the next Casting Call, and we will look into it!

Grand Theft Box Office

By Nick De Bruyne

"The buzz in Hollywood, which I heard from some Hollywood folks...is people are worried whether Iron Man the movie is going to get killed by Grand Theft Auto the game." These were the words said by John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts during an interview with the Financial Times. Riccitiello, as some know, is heading EA's attempted hostile takeover of 2K Games, the publishers of Grand Theft Auto IV. Analysts predicts that GTA IV could sell 5.8 Million copies in it's first week, giving it retail sales of around $360 million (R2.8 billion), with total predicted sales hitting the 13 million mark. It's no wonder that Hollywood is worried. The gaming industry has boomed significantly over the last couple of years and I'm not surprised that something like this is happening. Ben Stillers' Heartbreak Kid suffered from opening weekend sales that weren't quite as high as they were hoping and the finger was pointed at Halo 3. Gaming has definitely come a long way if the folks in Hollywood are genuinely worried that a new video game is going to destroy their movies opening weekend. Riccitiello also emphasizes this point saying that “The games industry 10 years ago was a toy business in the minds of most consumers. Toys ‘R’ Us at the time merchandised products alphabetically so Monsters toys were next to Madden [NFL football games], Barbies were next to boxing games.” Gaming is truly starting to be recognized as a very lucrative industry and a widespread, popular form of entertainment. The eye of the world is on gaming now more than ever, for better or for worse.

Resident Evil 5's producer speaks

By James

When it was first shown, Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 was accused of racism. Featuring a white-as-snow lead character gunning down lots of obviously black zombies, the R word hit the roof, sending Capcom scuttling and even claiming that the game is not set in Africa, but Haiti (how that makes a difference escapes me, but this seemed to content most …

First GTA IV Print Review

By Nick De Bruyne
April 14, 2008

Some images have made their way onto the net of the first GTA IV print review from The Official Xbox Magazine. By their verdict I think we can assume that they like it. The review states that "It's got a world you can believe in, a cast you care about and a script stuffed with brilliant moments" and concludes by saying that "This sets the standard for what you should expect from a truly next-gen game. You owe it to yourself to play it." I was a fan of all the previous GTA games and I simply cannot wait for this one to be released on the 29th. Im counting the seconds.
