Activision and developer Treyarch are going all in on online services this year. If Call of Duty isn’t going to spend obscene amounts of cash on providing a narrative structure, then fans are well within their rights to expect a tighter and even more polished multiplayer offering.
Call of Duty Black Ops IIII may be ditching single-player this year in favour of a more tightened-up multiplayer, zombies and battle royale experience, but at least one traditional component is going to remain inside of Treyarch’s signature series: Nuketown!
Call of Duty is one of the worst offenders when it comes to season passes and DLC. With brand new maps perpetually tied to map packs, there’s a splintered player base. Many other multiplayer games have moved away from this model, instead giving players free maps over the game’s life time.
Despite reports stating the contrary, Black Ops IIII never had a traditional campaign that was eventually cut out. Instead, Treyarch never had one to start with.
For the first time ever, Call of Duty is skipping its bombastic weekend mode campaign, as developer Treyarch focuses all of its attention on its other gameplay options such as solo stories starring the multiplayer specialists.
Revealed last night at the Black Ops IIII event in sunny Los Angeles, developer Treyarch’s take on the battle royale mode is called Blackout. All the action that you’d expect of Call of Duty, spread across a wide map, characters and plenty of weapons. Well, minus the massive player count, because Treyarch is undecided yet on just how many players it’ll allow into any given session of Blackout.
It looks like the rumours were true! For a while now, rumours have abounded that Call of Duty Black Ops 4 would be home to a new Battle Royale mode. As revealed by Treyarch at today’s community reveal event, it looks like that’s completely true. Call of Duty will have its own every-man-for-himself 100 player mode.
Set between Black Ops 2 and 3, the multiplayer is completely grounded. There are fancy, futuristic weapons and gadgets, along with crazy slides – but most of the action has soldiers with their feet on terra firma. There are no thrust jumps, no wallruns – but the fast, fluid movement you had in Black Ops
