It’s impossible to review every single game released in a year here at Critical Hit, and sometimes genuinely decent games slip through the cracks. So welcome to a new monthly column in which our writers have a look at gems of yesteryear that we didn’t review on release. This week we take a look at Dave Gilbert’s latest point-and-click foray into urban fantasy.

With Resident Evil 2 returning this month and reimagining Raccoon City as a deadlier hive of the undead, we started to thinking about the most important things in life: Which weapon would we want with us if we were ever stuck in the middle of a zombie apocalypse? When it comes guns, swords and all manner of exotic tools of destruction, video games have never been short on ideas for death dealers.

Normally these games have nothing in common with the actual main game, but with Far Cry: New Dawn Ubisoft has decided to link the two... kind of.

There’s no sugar-coating one indisputable fact in the gaming industry: EA’s handling of the franchise, has been nothing more than a colossal f***-up of note. There’s a reason that this RedLynx/Ubisoft series has been with us for so many years (20 if you include the original Java version). Basically it’s fun. We could’ve said flat-out fun, but there’s much more finesse to the experience than that, as players soon discover. Just like learning to ride a real bike, the basics of Trials never truly leave you. But as the series has evolved, the gameplay has become ever more nuanced, and now it’s time for more people to explore the many ways that flipping two-wheeled rides around like a fool can be so very fulfilling.
