If you were expecting Ride 3 to be the perfect fusion of quality and quantity of content, then I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news for you: An adequate sequel that has more bugs in it than your helmet visor after a breakfast run, almost no soul to its racing spirit and the bare minimum of fun spread throughout its sporadic modes. The third time is not the charm in Ride 3.

The more things change, the more they stay the same as the video games of the last decade still had one time-honoured tradition up their sleeves: A good ol’fashioned boss fight! Whether you were slugging away at glorified bullet sponges or trying to outlast juggernauts that were capable of laughing at your mightiest attacks, here’s a look at some of the best and most satisfying boss fights of the decade.

Celeste is an emotional game, one that uses visuals, writing and music to really invest the player in Madeline’s story. Yet what I think makes it special is that it offers an important message through something that only a video game could achieve: A playstyle. Mechanics are something so unique to the video game medium. Just like great poets experiment and challenge the form of how language is written so too do great developers challenge how we interact with their art and when a developer takes advantage of this, marrying interactivity with conventional storytelling...well, you get something incredibly powerful. Something like Celeste.

With two seasons down so far in Marvel's Runaways, Gertrude ‘Gert’ Yorkes has emerged as a fan favourite due to her being the heart and soul of the show, who also happens to have a pet Velociraptor that she is psychically bonded to. No More Heroes and its sequel were some of the finest games on Nintendo’s Wii, showing that the system could be home to games filled with violence and gore, juxtaposed against the family-friendly fare that flooded its library. There’s a brilliant little strategy game here, one that deserves plenty of love and none of the usual mobile gaming stigma that usually comes bundled with these experiences. For a game that is entirely free and still offers plenty of entertainment without spending a single cent on it, that’s not a bad deal at all.
