So what’s on the schedule for tonight? Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. will have interviews after the main show, with a few exhibition matches and rumours of Mortal Kombat 11 having a time travel element to its story again. Will EarthRealm finally stop the forces of OutWorld for good this time, or will this be the beginning of a new war of the realms? Whatever the end result, you can bet that Mortal Kombat 11 is going to paint the town red with its action.

The more things change, the more they stay the same as the video games of the last decade still had one time-honoured tradition up their sleeves: A good ol’fashioned boss fight! Ubisoft apologises for “poorly executed” forced heterosexual romance in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey DLC

By Geoffrey Tim

201

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is one of my favourite games from last year, and I spent dozens of hours role playing as my own idealised, ass-kicking version of Kassandra. The game was always sold as being about player choice, with even the character’s gender being an option; a first for an Assassin’s Creed game. For the most part, the game let players play whoever they liked, letting them forge hetero and homosexual relationships with abandon. The game’s latest DLC however, forced players into a cisnormative relationship for the sake of procreation – and many players weren’t happy about it

Celeste is an emotional game, one that uses visuals, writing and music to really invest the player in Madeline’s story. Yet what I think makes it special is that it offers an important message through something that only a video game could achieve: A playstyle. Mechanics are something so unique to the video game medium. Just like great poets experiment and challenge the form of how language is written so too do great developers challenge how we interact with their art and when a developer takes advantage of this, marrying interactivity with conventional storytelling...well, you get something incredibly powerful. Something like Celeste.

When Xbox introduced their Game Pass service in 2017, it was…it was alright I’d say. A few big games, plenty of medium-budget titles and a price tag that made it affordable enough to make it a worthy substitute for allowing your children to be looked after by the warm glow of an LED TV screen. Fast forward to 2019, and …
