It’s absolutely amazing, how when one new idea takes root and provides a disruption to the status quo, the old guard rushes to squash it as quickly as possible. Take AirBnB for instance. What you’ve got, is the Uber of hotel rooms. People are free to create their own guest lodge, prospective tenants can save cash when they rent a residential room for the night and everyone is happy. Unless you’re a hotel chain of course.

Because I’m a grumpy old bastard, there are few things in life that give me great pleasure. If there’s one thing that never fails to engage my senses, it’s food. All sorts of food. OppiKoppi, one of South Africa’s longest-running, most prolific and dustiest music festivals is giving 2019 a skip. Organiser Matchbox LIVE’s CEO Theresho Selesho confirmed that the festival will be cancelled for this year, postponing the 25th edition of the thing to 2020 instead.

I just can’t fathom it though. Why would any sane, rational grown human eat something that tastes like washing up sugary washing up liquid when there are perfectly respectable things like Eat-Sum-Mores and Tennis biscuits to be had?

Comic Con Cape Town may be the shake up that the Western Cape convention scene needs, but the announced dates for the 2020 event had fans shocked. With a 1-3 May date for Comic Con Cape Town, many fans saw this announcement as a case of organiser ReedPOP muscling in on FanCon’s territory in a bid to crush the local competition.

One show a year may not be enough for Comic Con organisers ReedPop, as the weekend saw them announce that Cape Town will get its own version of the expo come 2020 at a date that puts them in direct competition with beloved annual event FanCon.

The year may be two months over already, but the cosplay night is still young! This year has a had a few conventions already, but the road to San Diego Comic Con, LA Anime Expo and Dragon Con just doesn’t feel complete until KatsuCon kicks the year off properly.
