Local co-op and couch gaming are largely dead; a relic of the past because – certain party games excluded - it’s so seldom that people invite friends over to play video games. Instead, people now play video games with their friend over the internet. It’s a pity, not just because sitting with friends on a couch and playing video games together or against each other is awesome, but because there are so many games that don’t have online multiplayer support; games that would be better if played with others.

Next month, Google will officially launch its cloud gaming enterprise, Stadia. Using the power of the cloud and their own processing farms, Google will allow players to play the latest and greatest games, without having to own expensive hardware. Instead, with a Chromecast Ultra and a connected controller, they’ll be able to buy games and play them on their TVs, beamed in real time over the internet, with their inputs streamed back to Google servers – with this going back and forth as people play games. It works - but it will soon work even better.
