October may be willing to test the resolve of your 13th cheque, but September feels like the prelude to madness. Almost three dozen games are out this month, across a wide variety of platforms and genres and honestly? It’s a fine month to sit back on a couch and let some atrophy set in while you wiggle your thumbs around. Here’s ten games that look especially good.

With just over a month left on the calendar before Middle-Earth: Shadow of War hits the ground running, the current marketing push for Monolith’s follow-up to 2014’s Shadow of Mordor has been…odd. Sometimes amping up the usual sequel values of bigger and orkier, sometimes producing comedy gold with trailers highlighting an Orc faction hellbent on having enough bling to attract a dragon over, Shadow of War does have the habit of sending out mixed messages to fans. And then there are the more touching moments, like the reveal of a brand new character within the sequel. Not just another new face, or a reimagining of a literary character but with an X chromosome, Shadow of War’s latest trailer is more personal for Monolith.

Go hands-on with the Nintendo Switch at the new pop-up store in Sandton City

I love the Nintendo Switch. As a platform, it’s rapidly becoming one of the most used systems in my home. It’s tricky to convince people that the Switch is such a killer though, especially given Nintendo’s history – or the massive gap of it – in South Africa. Destiny 2 – New live-action trailer, engram drop details and pre-load times revealed

By Darryn Bonthuys

Confused about the plot of Destiny 2? It’s not that hard to really understand the setup: Everything you know and loved is dead. Even puppies, and it’s time to punch Dominus Ghaul right in his stupid face with as many bullets as possible. That’s the note that the latest live-action trailer for Destiny 2 starts off with, which is surprisingly funnier than you’d expect it to be as Bungie’s sequel cycles in what has become a Hollywood staple for live-action trailers: A catchy song from yesteryear with some expensive visual effects.
