Energy drinks are big business. The stuff companies are shilling for gamers – like G-Fuel (The Official Drink of esports!), Rogue Energy, Kill Cliff and a host of other pre-mixed or drink mix powders are making a killing selling their wares to gamers who want an edge in the games they play. These drinks purport to increase mental acuity and reflexes, mostly by repackaging caffeine in sexy gamer-focused packaging.

This generation won’t be as fondly remembered by Microsoft, as Sony and Nintendo left the brand in the dust thanks to their own arsenal of high quality games that resulted in some of the finest system-sellers around. Microsoft is ending its generation with more stable footing, and if the future is any indication, it’s going to be establishing its own rhythm and flow as it releases more original games in the future.

When Shenmue III was revealed at E3 in 2015, fans of the series were elated – mostly because the thing’s been dormant for decades, and a last game would finally give a bit of closure to a game that ended on a cliffhanger. Though the game was first shown at Sony’s E3 press conference that year, it was subsequently revealed to be a crowdfunded game that would be available for PC and PlayStation 4. Many of the PC gamers who backed the game are now furious

If you were looking for nothing but JRPGs in the wee hours of the morning, then Square Enix did not disappoint. The penultimate show before Nintendo closes off the press conference later tonight, Square Enix’s intimate event may have been focused on one single genre for most of its running time but it also had a few surprises up its sleeve.

At least Microsoft’s giving Splinter Cell some love. The Xbox team has revealed the final wave of original Xbox games to receive backwards compatibility on the Xbox One, and the line up includes all of the old Splinter Cell games, including the very best one: Chaos Theory. It joins another 4 OG Xbox games, and 19 more Xbox 360 games that are now playable on a console that plays three generations of games.

Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

It looks like the two-decade long exile is finally over. Final Fantasy 8 is coming back.
