When Shenmue III was revealed at E3 in 2015, fans of the series were elated – mostly because the thing’s been dormant for decades, and a last game would finally give a bit of closure to a game that ended on a cliffhanger. Though the game was first shown at Sony’s E3 press conference that year, it was subsequently revealed to be a crowdfunded game that would be available for PC and PlayStation 4. If you were looking for nothing but JRPGs in the wee hours of the morning, then Square Enix did not disappoint. The penultimate show before Nintendo closes off the press conference later tonight, Square Enix’s intimate event may have been focused on one single genre for most of its running time but it also had a few surprises up its sleeve.

At least Microsoft’s giving Splinter Cell some love. The Xbox team has revealed the final wave of original Xbox games to receive backwards compatibility on the Xbox One, and the line up includes all of the old Splinter Cell games, including the very best one: Chaos Theory. It joins another 4 OG Xbox games, and 19 more Xbox 360 games that are now playable on a console that plays three generations of games.

Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

It looks like the two-decade long exile is finally over. Final Fantasy 8 is coming back.

I’ve waxed lyrical before on how Final Fantasy Brave Exvius may be one of the best freemium mobile games available today. It’s the Final Fantasy formula condensed into a hyper-quick battle system that is constantly rewarding and always evolving. Set in a world of mystery known as Lapis, the power struggle is about to get a whole lot bigger as War of the Visions focuses its attention on tactical action that would make a certain War of the Lions very proud.

Oh Square Enix, you delightful tease. Over the last couple of days, the publisher has been hinting at something new being on the horizon. And by hinting, I mean that they’ve been posting cryptic messages which happen to be formatted as travel logs from one Captain Archan. So far, the messages have been painting a story of Earth being ravaged, one last hope surviving amongst the stars and a lethal militia that’s out to get ol’ Archan.
